One of Pink Verbena’s favorite sources for inspiration is HGTV’s hit show, Fixer Upper. Stars include the super handy, super funny husband and wife team, Chip and Joanna Gaines. As co-owners of the real estate, renovation and design company, Magnolia Homes, these two have leveraged their individual skill sets and together, they’ve helped transform over 100 homes!
This duo is inseparable! And the work they do together is breathtakingly beautiful! But, we have to admit, it’s Joanna’s keen eye for design and warmth of spirit that has us hanging on her every word. The woman is brilliant! So, we thought we’d share our list of 5 things Joanna has opened our eyes to.
#1. Developing Your Design Aesthetic Takes Time
Very few of us are born with great taste or a sense of style! And refreshingly enough, neither was Joanna. She’s admitted that earlier on, her first home with Chip was a bit of a design mess and that she “experimented” often. But, as we can see from the masterpieces she’s helped create on her show, her design style has become more refined over time. So keep working at it. You never know – – you may be the next Joanna Gaines!
#2. If You’re Passionate About Home Design, Take the Leap!
For many of us, doing what we really care about can seem like a luxury! I mean, we’ve got kids to raise, partners to care for, bills – – The list of priorities can run on and on. But if you have the creative itch to take your love of D.I.Y. and turn it into something BIGGER, don’t be afraid to move on that inclination. Rather, use Joanna as your source of inspiration. She wasn’t always the co-star on a hit show. In fact, she launched an early incarnation of her retail shop around the same time she and Chip started a family. After a hiatus and taking some time to reflect on her true purpose, she reopened her shop, Magnolia Market, and hasn’t looked back since. But like us, she wrestled with creating balance at home with her family. Through hard work, she’s made it. I bet you could, too.
#3. Use Your Imagination…Look for the Potential
The premise of the show Fixer Upper is that Chip and Joanna find properties that need a whole lotta TLC in idyllic neighborhoods. Families in search of their dream home are placed in positions where they have to “create” that dream almost from scratch. It requires tons of imagination and trust in Joanna’s vision for the project. And, of course, each week we see the Gaines duo take a house that was once a travesty and turn it into a triumph. So if you have an outdated half-bath or a dilapidated outdoor patio area that require some time and attention, don’t let the uncertainty of the project stop you in your tracks. Close your eyes and visualize the living space of your dreams and go for it! Start with the vision!
#4. Let Family Be Your Reason, Not Your Excuse
Another thing we love about watching Fixer Upper is seeing Chip and Joanna balance being parents of four cute kids while running a multitude of projects. Often times, you can hear Joanna remark about how hard it is to wear so many hats while being a mom. Yet, you see here involve her little ones during many of the episodes. Moreover, Joanna’s work on passion projects like her family’s farmhouse is something she wanted to create specifically for her family. It’s easier said than done, but let’s take a page from Joanna’s book and find healthy ways to bridge the gap between our personal creative passions and family lives. At the end of the day, the best thing you can give your loved ones is a happier “YOU”! Besides, when they see you living and loving life, they’ll inevitable want to become part of that. You don’t have to chose between one or the other – – chose what you love!
#5. Collaborating with a Cooky Counterpart
It’s easy to see – – Chip and Joanna are complete opposites…but it works! Sometimes I enjoy watching this couple’s chemistry more than the final reveal at the end of the episode. They seem to embrace each other’s design and remodeling strengths and use them to their advantage. Now, we may not have a Chip Gaines at home, but there’s something to glean from their playful dynamic. Including your partner or spouse can be fun, so why not find ways to incorporate their interests or ideas when tackling a major project at home. The end result will undoubtedly be even more rewarding when you can look back at what you did together. And if you share one or two laughs in the process, then that’s a home run!
